Julian - 2 months old

I took Julian to the doctor for the first time for his 2-month check-up today. I’d been debating about when to take him since he was born at home and hadn’t seen a doctor before (though my midwife examined him at each appointment I had postpartum) and this seemed like a good time to start.

All went well. He’s pretty much perfect and healthy as can be. Since he’s becoming quite the little charmer lately, he flashed a few smiles at the doctor. He is in the 100th percentile for weight and height – 14 lbs., 13 oz., and 25 inches long. Just for comparison, Ava was 15 lbs., 5 oz. and 24 inches long at two months. Yay for mama milk and growing big babies. πŸ˜‰

I have to wonder about some of the questions the doctors routinely ask though. I realize they are concerned with the wellfare of the baby and I guess some parents don’t think about things like smoke detectors or rear-facing carseats, but it just seems odd that the majority of the questions asked today had to do with safety (“What year was your house built? So there’s no lead-based paint?”), rather than health – though I guess safety begets health, right?

She also gave me her spiel about vaccinations, but said she was fine with delaying/selectively vaxing (which is what we did with Ava starting at 12 months) and to let her know when I was ready to start. Will do.

This evening, after changing Julian’s diaper I was patting at his mouth with a blanket saying “ba-ba-ba-ba” and I swear he let out a little laugh. Ava was chattering away at the time so by way of encouraging her to pipedown a bit, I said, “Ava, I think your brother is laughing!” I tried it again and he let out another laugh. I forgot what a sweet sound those baby laughs are! πŸ™‚ Jody and I tried again tonight after he got home from work, but we couldn’t coax one out. Bummer, but I’m sure it won’t be long before we hear another one.

Don’t forget to say hi and come out of lurkdom if you haven’t already. Time is running out!

Wow, you really do grow big babies! My sister breast feed both of her kids and she has tiny babies. Her daughter Madeline was 16 lbs 13 oz and 31 inches long at her 1 year check-up. She was a healthy but small little girl. She used to always get comments about how small her kids were which really made her feel bad, but then she started looking at the bright side, it was much easier to carry around a small baby all day long than a heavier one.

Yay for big healthy babies! I seem to grow them small then they get huge from my glorious fatty milk. I couldn’t be more proud of my self as should you!

Yay for momma’s milk! He’s so cute.

I always find it funny the questions peds have to ask as well – “do you have a pool? is it fenced” is the main question we get asked, along with the car seat question. I find it hard to believe that some people are ignorant about the car seat issue…but just the other day I saw it with my own eyes. We were at Adam’s opthamologist and Adam was playing on the floor with another baby in the waiting room, about the same age. When we left to the parking lot, I noticed that family was parked next to us and the mom had the back of the van open and was making a bottle for the baby. Everyone else was in the car, and she scooped up the baby and got into the FRONT SEAT with him, gave him the bottle and they drove away. My mouth was hanging open and had I had my wits about me, I would have gotten their license plate and called someone. I couldn’t believe someone would drive away with a baby in the front seat. I was especially unnerved because we had JUST been in a car accident a few days before with both kids in the car…and I was so grateful they were okay and they were strapped in tight in their car seats.

Anyway…sorry to write a novel in your comments section. πŸ™‚ I always thought people “knew” these things, but I guess not. Or maybe they did and just didn’t care (they had so many people in that car, I don’t even think there was room for a carseat) Grrr.

    Hope things are going well!

What a chubby, cute boy my little grandson Julian is!
And what a good momma you are, my first baby, Amy.
He’s getting so big-thanks to your loving, unselfish mothering (and his genes). Would love to hear him laugh-wish we lived closer. Love and kisses.

Lol…One time I took my boys to the pedi and he asked me if they wear seatbelts in the car and helmets when they ride bicycles. It’s so, so entirely fucked up that there is an actual reason why they have to ask these questions.

Hi, I really like your site. You don’t know me, but found your site by accident. We live in California and Dr. Sears is our son’s Doc. We love the entire Sears Team! Curious….have you ever read the book “How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor”. You may have to get it used through Amazon.com, but it is sooo worth it! I think you would be very interested in the vaccination section. Dr. Bob Sears recommended to us. Your a GREAT MOM! Oh and yes “You can change the world, even if it is in a small way”!! You go girl!!
