The big project May 24, 2007

Filed under: Family and Friends, house,Jody — amygeekgrl @ 9:21 am

My in-laws have been visiting us this week, here from Oklahoma. The visit is going well. They are enjoying spending time with Ava and meeting Julian for the first time in person. And Ava is eating up all of the special time with “me-maw.”

Jody took most of the week off from work and he and my father-in-law have been installing wood floor laminate in our dining room. The floor is in now and it looks really nice. The only thing left to do at this point is to put up the new baseboards and, once we move the hutch back in, the room will be pretty much be done. We do need to get some felt pads for under the chair and table legs and I’m thinking about getting an area rug for under the table and to add a bit of color. We’ll see.

I’ll have to post some before and after pictures once it’s all complete. I don’t know who’s idea it was to have carpet in the dining room in the first place, but kids, food and carpet don’t mix.

Despite all the sawing, hammering, etc. that’s gone along with this project, I’m happy to report there were no injuries. Well, no injuries associated with the project. Yesterday Jody was balancing on one foot while he took off his pants, getting ready for a shower. He lost his balance and went to put his other foot down and jammed his middle toe right into the laundry basket. It has since turned purple and we’re pretty sure it’s broken. Ouch. At least he still has all of his appendages.

Good finds, good deals, good golly – we spent a lot of money May 16, 2007

As you know, this past weekend I participated in the Just Between Friends sale – a huge consignment event with over 300 consignors. Jody and I went to the pre-sale night, for consignors and friends only, and came away with quite a bit of loot.

I hit the clothes racks with Julian in the Ergo while Jody and Ava walked around looking at other things. I had picked out several items for Ava when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see Jody wearing a big backpack and Ava riding high in it, grinning from ear to ear. “I’m in a backpack!” The pack – Kelty Kids Back Country – was in great shape and, although we haven’t done much hiking in a while, we decided to get it. Even if we don’t use it much, I think we can resell it for what we paid for it.

After making my way through the girls’ clothes, I headed over to find some things for Julian. Not long after I’d started looking, Jody came back, this time wheeling Ava around in a double jogging stroller. Apparently she was getting to try out several modes of transportation that night. 😉 We had previously talked about getting a stroller, so I was cool with getting it. I had actually been eyeing that one when the owner dropped it off earlier in the day.

I took the kids out in it for a test run on Friday. The front wheel pulls a bit to the right, but I think we can fix that without too much effort. Julian fell asleep in it, so that’s a good sign. I parked him under a tree, then Ava and I had some fun playing in the park.

Back to the sale…
As for clothes, I ended up buying for Ava (all size 4T):
3 dresses,
3 shirts,
2 tanktops,
3 shorts/skorts,
and 1 pair of capri pants.

And for Julian (some 12M, some 18M – yep, he’s huge and not quite 6 months old yet):
3 rompers,
4 shirts,
2 onesies,
1 pair of pants,
1 pair of overall shorts,
5 bibs (the way he drools, he goes through them like there’s no tomorrow),
1 sun hat (new with tags),
and a bathing suit with matching robe.

Combine that with what they already had and I think the kids are definitely set for the summer. 🙂

We ended up spending a bit more than I’d planned, but I feel like we got a good deal on everything we bought, and we should get some use out of it all, so it was worth it. One of these days, I just might show some restraint when it comes to these sales. But with such great deals, maybe not.

I’ll find out how much money I made off the items I consigned when I get my check in the mail in two weeks. Hopefully it will make a dent in what we spent. 😉

ya say it’s your birthday May 8, 2007

Yesterday was my 32nd birthday. The day was rather chilly and rainy, so we didn’t get to do anything outside. We did, however, go out for lunch to California Pizza Kitchen (Jody took the day off), took a scenic drive in the mountains (where it was snowing), and ordered dinner in from one of our favorite restaurants.

Jody and the kids got me subscriptions to Mothering magazine and Vegetarian Times. Yay! I’m also getting a new camera case that’s on the way.

My sister, who’s birthday is tomorrow, is coming over tonight so we can celebrate both of us. I still need to figure out what I’m making for dinner and how I’m going to get a cake made in time. Perhaps we’ll be buying one instead. 😉
Here are a couple pics of me and the kiddos from yesterday.

P.S. I’m still working on my write up of Ina May’s talk. I’m about half-way done.

What are we up to? (pics) May 3, 2007

Life has been pretty busy around our house lately, but I thought I’d take a break from the more serious topics I’ve been blogging about lately to give you a pictorial update (all taken with the point & shoot).

We had Grandma (my mom) out for a visit in April. I was having camera burnout and, thus, didn’t take many pics, but here are a couple.

Ava with Jody on “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” – 4/26/07. Jody was told by one of his coworkers that they took an informal poll and Ava was the cutest kid there that day. 😉 :

Here’s Ava with her dear friend “Roger” the worm. She named him herself. I had no idea a girl could become so attached to a worm over the span of about 15 minutes. She was carrying it everywhere, then putting it back in the dirt, then getting it back out, then putting it back, getting it out, etc. Then the crisis happened. She dropped Roger in a crack in our steps and thought she couldn’t get him out. I had stepped into the house because Julian woke up and I was just picking him up when I heard her start crying, “Roger!” I thought one of the dogs ate him. I hurried outside to find that he had fallen in the crack and I was easily able to get him out and give him back to a very thankful and relieved little girl. What a heart that kid has.

This is what happens when mommy tries to go out for a couple hours to help with a fund-raiser for our AP group. Ava falls asleep on the couch. Why can she do this for daddy, but not for mommy? In all fairness Julian had a very hard time with my being gone, so Jody didn’t have an easy night. I ended up leaving after being there for an hour to come home. By then, both kids were asleep. Isn’t that always the way?

Julian’s first time in the grass – and he liked it! 5/2/07 He’s sitting up on his own kind of well these days. He still topples over occasionally, but it hasn’t upset him yet.

We’ve been spending a lot of time outside, either in our yard or at the park lately. It’s been great and definitely helps break up the monotony of the day. Here are the kids having fun together outside:

Yep, life is pretty good. 🙂

“The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.”
— Gloria Steinem

Thank you all so very much for your honesty, candor and support regarding my last post. I greatly admire each of you for sharing your own personal struggles with me, as well as the things you’ve found to help you cope.

On one hand, I’m glad to know I’m not alone. On the other hand, it saddens me that so many of us struggle with this and yet never talk about it.

I often find it hard to open up to other women, even those I consider friends. Blogging makes communication a bit easier, because of the anonymity involved. Perhaps blogging about it here is a start and, eventually I will be able to talk about it with others in person. I think it’s hard for us women (mothers specifically) to open ourselves up, admit we are human (like it or not, we are) and talk about something like this because we fear that others will think poorly of us or judge us. It was refreshing to see that no one passed judgment in their comments, on me or anyone else. Thank you.

And thank you to those of you who’ve taken me up on my challenge too. I have enjoyed learning more about each of you through your honest posts. I will put together a list of all participants (so you still have time to write something and let me know) in the next week.

5 months! (and a little update on life) April 23, 2007

Julian 5 months old 4/23/07Ava 4/23/07

My boy is 5 months old today. Can you believe it? Time sure flies when you’re running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Sorry for that visual. Ugh. (I had to share a pic of the girl along with the boy. I took both of those today. If you know anything about almost 3-year-olds, you would marvel right along with me that the girl had a quiet, somber moment today. It was fleeting, but I captured it.)

Seriously though, we’ve been PLENTY busy around here lately. As you may have previously read, my mom was in town and staying with us for the past 10 days. It was wonderful to have her visit and offer her assistance with miscellaneous household tasks as well as watch the kids. We got so much accomplished!

Ava thoroughly enjoyed all of the undivided attention she got and I think she’s going through Grandma withdrawal now. And Julian warmed up to Grandma in no time flat, which sure made it easier for me to run out to appointments and errands.

Jody and I got the garage cleaned out, I got started on some painting in the house, we had some contractors come by for estimates on redoing our bathroom shower, I went to the eye doctor and ordered new glasses (can’t wait to get them!), I got a haircut, I had a hypnotherapy appointment, Jody and I went out ALONE for pizza and beer to celebrate our anniversary (boy, was that nice!), I washed some walls in the house, I bought the kids some spring/summer clothes, we had the air ducts cleaned out, we went to the museum for arts and crafts, we went to the farm for “farm fest,” and I’m sure there are things I’m forgetting. Not to mention all of the things my mom helped out with while here.

Today she flew home to MI and it was back to reality around here. I didn’t have a very good night last night (my back is giving me grief) and today was exhausting, so I’m hitting the hay early.

I have a lot to write about in the days/weeks ahead, so stay tuned. It will take time to sort it all out and get it typed though. With my mom here, I think I temporarily forgot how time-consuming having 2 kids under 3 years old really is. I could seriously get used to having someone stay here to help out with the kids full-time and I totally understand why some families employ nannies. 😉

more on putting myself “out there” April 19, 2007

Filed under: Family and Friends,My life — amygeekgrl @ 11:32 am

Thanks to all of you for your comments and support regarding my last post. Lots of good food for thought there.

I’ve been thinking more about this topic and wanted to clarify some things for myself (and anyone else who wants to read it). I said in my comments that part of my issue with putting myself out there is that family reads my blog, so that makes me tentative to post about certain things. However I want to clarify that that doesn’t mean I’m stewing, wanting to talk/write smack about my family or anything. I feel that some things that are a part of my life/family’s life seem a little too personal for me to blog about, even though there are times I’d like to get them off my chest.

My bigger issue really is that, like it or not, I’m a people pleaser. You might think it’s odd that I like to avoid confrontation, while in the same breath I admit I like to blog about controversial things from time to time. I like to share my opinions, however I’m not good about letting the negative responses I receive slide off my back. I tend to carry that negativity around with me for a while and I know that’s not healthy. That may be why I’ve avoided writing about controversial topics lately. I don’t want the negativity that they seem to bring.

I want to be liked and respected for my thoughts and opinions. I try hard not to trash other people for their opinions, while still reserving my right to disagree.

Perhaps in the next week or so, I will post a challenge to myself and those of you who are interested (MB – thanks for suggesting this in your comments), to post about a topic of your choosing on your blog with complete honesty. (Maybe it could be a topic that you’ve avoided writing about in the past, but really want to put out there.) Then you can respond to let me know that you posted and I’ll link to everybody’s raw, honest posts. Anyone up for the challenge?
